Kittichai is NYC’s greatest Thai restaurant and, although purists and snobs endlessly debate its authenticity, it showcases inventive, sophisticated Thai food in a striking, sexy SoHo setting designed by the Rockwell Group. The dramatic interior is very adroitly lit, with row upon row of bottled yellow and violet orchids seemingly illuminated from within and a reflecting pool in the center of the dining room congested with floating votive candles and water lilies. The rooms are swaged in vibrant red and orange silk and populated by bamboo gazebos and carved wood totems.

Somewhat amazingly, chef Angus An has contrived to prevent the food from being outshone by the seductive visual splendor of the interior. The food is served family style and the tasting menus are a terrific value and ideal for sampling the range and diversity of the kitchen’s talents. There are some outstanding dishes, including fish cakes, crispy rock shrimp, crispy whole fish with galangal dressing and green chili, and coconut braised short ribs with kaffir lime leaf, mint and fresh coriander. With fresh, high quality ingredients, excellent execution, stylish décor and reasonable prices, Kittichai should be on any New Yorker’s shortlist for a winning dining experience.
