REVIEW

Fofo by el willy

FoFo by el Willy is, along with the perennially popular Catalunya, one of Hong Kong’s two fine Spanish restaurants. It is located at the top of the M88 building in Central which affords excellent views and natural light from its floor-to-ceiling windows. The combination of its white-on-white interior design and the verdant, sloping hillside of Victoria Peak outside, make it at particular pleasant and tranquil place to dine at lunchtime. The décor also has some quirky touches: rows of wooden penguins and other fiberglass animal figurines. There is a small, but very pleasant bar that is ideal for drinks or a quick bite.

The Spanish cuisine includes both traditional and contemporary dishes. The classic Iberico ham with Catalan style tomato bread is a nice way to begin the meal, and the “Bikini” – Barcelona style toasted bread with Iberico ham and black truffle and mozzarella – is, like the one at Catalunya, superb. The organic eggs cooked at 62 degrees in crispy potatoes and & onions “nest” with chorizo was decadent and addictive. Some of the dishes failed to impress or had off-notes (such as the avocado in the scallop ceviche), but largely the food is very impressive. The more significant issue we encountered was atrocious service – a comprehensive catalog of the missteps would have us here all day, so a few illustrious examples shall suffice: our party was provided with only one menu, requiring that I get up myself and walk over to pick up a few additional ones; a server came by and we said we were ready to order and my guest requested the wine list, whereupon the waiter handed it to him and walked off for the next 10 minutes; our silverware was repeatedly not replaced, nor plates provided, causing us to resort to wondering if we should just pick up the ceviche with our hands. If the restaurant could just fix that systemic issue, I could highly recommend it, but at present it detracts pretty dramatically from the quality of the food.
